BEA Awards the 2024 New Faculty Research Grant to Dr. Stefanie Davis Kempton

Washington, DC – The Broadcast Education Association (BEA) is pleased to announce that Dr. Stefanie Davis Kempton, Penn State Altoona, is the recipient of BEA’s 2024 New Faculty Research Grant.  

Dr. Stefanie Davis Kempton is an assistant professor of communications at Penn State Altoona with a specialization in broadcast journalism. Her research focuses on representations of women in the media and the lived experiences of women media professionals. She earned her Ph.D. from the Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State University. Prior to academia, she worked as a television broadcaster for several national, regional, and local media outlets. 

Kempton has appeared nationally on ABC News, Fox News, Bloomberg TV, and the Big Ten Network. Her research interests include gender in the news, media representations of marginalized groups, and social media. 

BEA’s New Faculty Research Grant (NFRG) seeks to promote scholarship through achievement by untenured broadcast and electronic media faculty. A cash grant of $1,000 was awarded to Dr. Kempton. Initial funding for this grant was provided by Rebecca Hayden, winner of BEA’s Distinguished Education Service Award in 1993, and long-time editor/publisher of broadcast and media books at Wadsworth Publishing Co. The grant honors the memory of Sydney W. Head (1913-1991) and Harrison B. Summers (1894-1980), two key pioneers in broadcast education. The recipient will be recognized at BEA’s annual awards ceremony in Las Vegas.
