2024 Kenneth Harwood Outstanding Dissertation Award Presented to Ahmad Alshehab, PhD.

Washington, D.C. – Ahmad Alshehab, PhD., Assistant Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kuwait University College of Arts, has been named the recipient of the 2024 Kenneth Harwood Outstanding Dissertation Award.  

Holding 12 years of extensive experience at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, Alshehab brings a wealth of practical knowledge to his academic endeavors. In addition to his academic role, Alshehab volunteers as an editor for academic journals and research symposiums. Alshehab holds a master’s degree in journalism and media studies from the University of South Florida Saint Petersburg and a Ph.D. in Journalism and Mass Communication from the Walter Cronkite School at Arizona State University. Alshehab’s research interests include science journalism, digital journalism, fake news, and political communication. He also boasts practical expertise in media production, having produced and served as executive producer for several documentary films. Throughout his academic journey, Alshehab has actively participated in various organizations, including serving as President of the Kuwaiti Students Club at Arizona State University and as an Establishing member of the Kuwaiti Graduate Students Group in the United States and the Scientific Research Team in Kuwait. Currently, Alshehab’s research is centered on exploring the implications of generative AI for journalism practice and ethics in the Middle East, showcasing his dedication to understanding and addressing contemporary media challenges.  

Established by Kenneth Harwood, Professor at the University of Houston and a former President of BEA, the award has been offering $1,000 for the outstanding Ph.D. dissertation in broadcasting and electronic media for over 25 years. The award was established through gifts started by Professor Harwood and a donation from a friend of BEA.  Each year the recipient is selected by BEA’s Research Committee.  The Harwood Dissertation Award will be presented to Dr. Alshehab at BEA’s annual convention in Las Vegas during a ceremony and reception on the evening of Saturday, April 13th at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
