The 2020 BEA Textbook Award has been awarded to Yumi Wilson, Gina Baleria & Grace Provenzano for Writing & Reporting the News for the 21st Century: The Speed at Which We Travel (Cognella, 2019).

Yumi Wilson (MFA, University of San Francisco) is a veteran journalist and tenured professor at San Francisco State University, where she teaches a variety of courses on media writing. She has worked as a reporter and editor at the Associated Press in Los Angeles and San Francisco Chronicle. Gina Baleria (PhD, San Francisco State University) is an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at Sonoma State University. Prior to discovering and falling in love with teaching, Dr. Baleria worked in broadcast and digital news, as an award-winning producer, writer, and reporter. Grace M. Provenzano (MMC, Arizona State University) is a member of the journalism faculty at Iowa State University. Provenzano worked as a news reporter, anchor and producer in several TV markets in the U.S. and helped launch the English Division of the international network Deutsche Welle (DW-TV)

In Writing & Reporting the News for the 21st Century, the authors take an innovative approach to teaching the fast-paced world of digital journalism. The text encourages students to embrace technology and social media while holding true to the ethical and professional standards of journalists.

The BEA Textbook Award was established in 2020 to recognize an outstanding textbook written by a BEA member(s) in the field of broadcasting and mass communication. Each year the recipient will be recognized at BEA’s annual awards ceremony in Las Vegas.
