Have you recently had a major case of the "2017's"?!?  We heard from multiple concerned members that with finals ending on Friday, they will be too exhausted by the midnight deadline to enter this year's Festival of Media Arts.  We have good news... we heard you. We very rarely do this, but we are extending the Festival deadline through the weekend (an extra 3 days) until Monday, December 18th at 11:59pm. You have more time to celebrate the end of the semester and still enter the World's Largest Media Competition for Faculty & Students. Who knows, maybe this extra time will allow you to complete a project and submit even MORE entries...

And remember, just because the deadline is now Monday the 18th, you don't have to wait until then to enter. Enter Today!

A Holiday Bonus: A Second December 2017 President's Corner

In my final column for the 2017 calendar year, I wanted to provide a quick update on activities at the fall board of directors meeting, which was held at the NAB building in Washington, DC the weekend before Thanksgiving. This annual two-day fall board meeting is when the bulk of the board’s work is handled.

A number of committees are working on initiatives for this year—e.g. Diversity and Inclusion, Membership, Research, Publications and Festival, to name a few—which they reported on. I don’t have space to highlight all the work that these committees are tasked with, but I will briefly mention a few highlights. The Membership Committee is working on ides to recruit new faculty and graduate student members to the organization. The Research Committee and Research Enhancement Committee are working on ways to increase the amount and rigor of research presented at the annual conference. The Festival Committee and Festival Advisory Committee will be announcing new student and faculty categories for the 2019 Festival of Media Arts. In the coming months, these committees will also unveil plans to showcase more faculty work during the 2019 Festival, while preserving the sanctity of the acceptance rates. Read More...

Signature Station Competition
Deadline: December 15th

The competition invites submissions of superior protocol and practices at student-run, faculty-advised college radio and television stations.  The main mission is to identify and impart areas of excellence in the hands-on facilitation of station functions such as philosophical engagement, community involvement, programming arrangement, branding/logo development, student management, volunteer recruitment, and broadcast equipment.  Through the Signature Station Competition, the SMA division will recognize and reward remarkable advisors, students, and stations at BEA’s annual convention held every April in Las Vegas.  Each radio and television station 1st place winner will receive a check for $200.

Student Media Clubs #BEAFilm48 Student Film Festival Winners Announced

We are pleased to recognize the winning entries from the inaugural BEA Student Clubs Film 48 student film festival.  Twenty teams completed in the 48-hour film festival held the weekend of November 10th-12th.  Each team was assigned a specific genre to use for their film.  The teams were also assigned three “production constants” that had to appear in each film—a left shoe, a character named Raven Fireswallow, and a line of dialog “This isn’t how I planned my Thursday morning.”   Winning teams will receive certificates and have their film screened during the annual BEA Conference in Las Vegas. Trust in Online News

Public trust in the news media has been in decline for the past 40 years. This is a problem for news organizations and the public alike. News organizations face not only skeptical audiences, but also competition from a proliferation of outlets peddling false information.
