Article I — NAME

The name of the division shall be the Gender and Sexuality Division (GSD)

Article II — MISSION

The mission of GSD shall be:  the improvement of teaching about gender and sexuality in digital media and other forms of media, the fostering of gender and sexuality-related research in all aspects of media, and the networking of faculty and professionals interested in researching gender and sexuality oriented topics relating to media.

To this end, the GSD shall provide the following:

  1. An annual juried paper competition featuring scholarly research in two categories, debut (for first time BEA submitters) and open (for those who have previously submitted work to BEA),
  2. A forum for discussion of issues pertinent to gender, sexuality and the media,
  3. Opportunities to network with other people interested in gender, sexuality and the media particularly at the annual BEA conference.
  4. To encourage dissemination of information about gender, sexuality and the media
  5. To foster and promote the teaching of information connected with gender, sexuality and media.

ARTICLE III – OFFICERS

The governing body of the Division shall be called the Leadership of the Gender and Sexuality Division and shall consist of: a Chair, a Vice-Chair, a Website Manager/Newsletter Editor and a Paper Competition Chair.  The Chair shall be the senior coordinating officer of the Leadership.

Section 1  –  Chair.  The Vice-Chair shall succeed the Chair on a yearly basis.  The duties of the Chair shall include:

  1. Representing the GSD in all BEA convention meetings,
  2. Chairing the Business Meeting at the annual BEA convention,
  3. Handling Division business in the interim between BEA conventions,
  4. Serving as panel coordinator, overseeing Leadership evaluation and ranking of panel proposals, and
  5. Authorizing expenditure of GSD funds.

Section 2  –  Vice-Chair.  The Vice-Chair shall be elected yearly. When feasible and desirable the Website Manager/Newsletter Editor shall succeed the Vice-Chair on a yearly basis. Duties of the Vice-Chair include:

  1. Representing the Division in all BEA convention meetings in absence of the Chair, or as designated by the Chair,
  2. Assisting the Chair during the business meeting at the annual BEA convention,
  3. Assisting the Chair in handling Division business in the interim between BEA conventions,
  4. Assuming the Chair’s position at the end of the year-long term,
  5. Coordinating a networking event at the BEA convention, and
  6. Review and evaluation of panel proposals for the GSD.

Section 3  –  Website Manager/Newsletter Editor.  The Website Manager/Newsletter Editor shall be elected yearly.  When feasible and desirable the Paper Competition Chair shall succeed the Website Manager/Newsletter Editor on a yearly basis.  The duties of the office shall include:

  1. Writing or editing all copy to go in the electronic newsletter,
  2. Regularly updating the website and notifying the membership of newly posted information
  3. Taking notes at and compiling minutes for the annual business meeting of the GID Division,
  4. Review and evaluation of panel proposals for the GSD, and
  5. Assuming the Vice-Chair’s position at the end of the year-long term.

Section 4  –  Paper Competition Chair.  The Paper Competition Chair shall be elected yearly.  The duties of the office shall include:

Prior to the convention:

  1. Disseminate information about the Paper Competition as widely as possible,
  2. Select at least three judges for the competition,
  3. Coordinate the judging procedures including preparing judging forms, making papers available to the judges and tallying judging forms.
  4. Notify winners and losers of the competition and provide feedback and make necessary arrangements to award checks for debut winners according to Article V,
  5. Notify the GSD Chair of the winners, their affiliations and paper titles so that they Chair may forward that information on to the convention program Chair.
  6. Review and evaluation of panel proposals for the GSD.

During the convention:

  1. Moderate the session in which the winners are presented.
  2. Follow up to make sure debut paper competition winners receive checks from BEA
  3. Assume the Website Manager/Newsletter Editor’s position at the end of the year-long term.

Section 5  –  Procedures for the Election of Officers.  The succession of officers takes place yearly and follows the following pattern, the Vice-Chair moves into the Chair’s position, the Website Manager/Newsletter Editor moves to Vice-Chair, and the Paper Competition Chair moves into the Website Manager/Newsletter Editor position.  Therefore, the election is generally open for the Paper Competition Chair, although nominations for all other positions are also welcomed.  Nominations will be taken from the floor for each vacant position at the business meeting at the annual BEA convention.  After nominations are closed, the candidate getting the most votes of the GID members who are present and voting will be elected to the office for each vacant position. To qualify to vote one must be a paid BEA member and a member of the GSD.

ARTICLE IV — NEWSLETTER

The newsletter shall be published at least three (3) times per year.  The first issue of the year shall be published in May, the second issue in September, and the third in March.  Writing, editing, publishing, and distributing the letter shall be the responsibility of the newsletter Chair in conjunction with the GSD Leadership.  The newsletter will be posted on the BEA website and members of the GSD will be notified of its posting through electronic communication.

ARTICLE V — PAPER COMPETITION

The purpose of the paper competition shall be to provide a juried evaluation of faculty work.  The competition shall be open to both members and nonmembers of the BEA.  However, all competition winners shall be required to attend the paper convention or forfeit their award and all presenters are required to be members of the BEA.  The paper competition shall follow the BEA guidelines and deadlines and shall consist of both open and debut categories.  The open category consists of those people who have previously presented work at any BEA conference.  The debut category consists of people who have not previously presented work at any BEA conference. The debut competition shall have a $200 award for first place and a $100 award for second place.  The open competition shall be available to anyone who would like to submit a paper.  There shall be first and second place winners in the open competition but no monetary awards.  The responsibility for operating the competition shall fall to the Paper Competition Chair, but funding for the awards shall come from the BEA.  There shall be at least three academic judges for the competition with the Paper Competition Chair making every effort to balance the judges by their interests.  The paper competition shall follow the deadlines established by the BEA.

ARTICLE VI — DIVISION PANELS

Panel proposals shall be submitted to the Chair of the GSD Division by the published deadline.  Both members and non-members of the BEA are eligible to submit panel proposals with the understanding that all panel members are planning to attend the BEA annual convention and will become members of the BEA.  The Chair shall then forward copies of the proposals to the GSD Leadership who rank order the panels according to established criteria that is sent out with the proposals. The Chair shall then submit the final panels in rank order to the convention coordinator by the deadlines established by the BEA.  Upon receipt of the final recommendation of the convention coordinator, the Chair shall notify the panel conveners of the decision regarding their proposals.

ARTICLE VII – BYLAW CHANGES

GSD members may propose bylaw changes 30 days in advance of the GSD business meeting at the convention Proposed changes are made in the form of a motion and require a second from another GSD members. Motions may be discussed prior to the meeting (e.g., via e-mail) and are also discussed at the meeting. When discussion is closed at the meeting, a vote is taken. To pass, a proposed bylaw change must receive a majority of votes from the division members who are present and voting at the annual meeting.
