Race and Gender in Electronic Media:  Challenges and Opportunities

Rebecca Ann Lind, University of Illinois at Chicago, Symposium Chair

The BEA 2015 Research Symposium (April 12, 2015, Las Vegas) is accepting submissions for a paper competition (faculty & student categories), and for a student poster competition (undergraduate & graduate categories) held in conjunction with a reception on April 11, 2015.

Issues of race and gender have been hardy perennials throughout the history of electronic media, remaining on the forefront during the period of rapid evolution we currently experience. This symposium will feature research examining the consequences, implications, and opportunities associated with issues of diversity in the electronic media.  The symposium will consider race and gender issues in both historical and contemporary (including newly emerging) electronic media (see focal points below).  Papers may reflect the intersection of race and gender, or intersections of either race or gender with other types of difference such as class, religion, and physical abilities or qualities.  All methods and paradigms are welcome, including but not limited to social scientific, humanistic, historical, and critical/cultural perspectives. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

DEADLINE FOR ALL SUBMISSIONS: DECEMBER 1, 2014.

About the BEA Research Symposium
Since its debut in 2008, the BEA Research Symposium has become a focal point of BEA’s research community and is held in conjunction with BEA’s annual convention each April. Past symposium chairs have included the most distinguished researchers in their field and have covered cutting-edge topics in the areas of media & the social self, sports, economics, media & morality,  technopolitics, race and gender, and entertainment. The success of the Symposium launched the Electronic Media Research book series, published by Routledge. In addition to a paper competition, the day-long symposium has a series of presentations and panels led by senior scholars.
