Boot Camp #1: Basic Research Methods
Overview of Quantitative Research Methods

Goals: The purpose of this one-day seminar is to provide rudimentary training in research methodology for BEA members who are expected do research in order to earn tenure and promotion, but may not have had formal training in research methods.

This "rookie" Boot Camp uses a combination of seminars and laboratory exercises to explore research methods and the publication process. Using the literature review that we've worked on together this week, we will specify a research question, then apply the methods we are discussing to answer that question. Each step in the research process will be covered, first from a general perspective and then in relation to our group project. This process will allow the group to collect and analyze data for a rudimentary study, with results available by the end of the day.

Schedule: The preliminary schedule is:

• 9:00-9:15 Welcome and introductions
• 9:15-10:15 Overview of Research Process: Theory
• 10:15-10:30 Break
• 10:30-11:30 Overview of Research Process: Methods, Variables, and Measures
• 11:30-12:30 Basic statistics: T-test, ANOVA, and Correlation
• 12:30-1:00 Lunch break
• 1:00-2:30 Group activity: Creating the instruments
• 2:30-3:15 Group activity: Data analysis
• 3:15-3:30 Break
• 3:30-4:00 Writing the research report
• 4:00-5:00 Publishing your results/where to submit?

There will also be a follow-up session on Tuesday during BEA to finalize the Survey Faculty and Facility:
The session will be conducted at the Greenspun School of Journalism at UNLV by members of the BEA Research Division including Tim Brown (Univ. of Central Florida), Jeff Wilkinson (Houston Baptist) and Dan Stout (Univ. of Nevada Las Vegas).
