BEA Research Grant

BEA Research Grant Application Process

Grant Overview
BEA will award grants ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 to support research projects on topics that align with the overall mission of BEA.  Applications are due by 11:59 pm EST on January 15, 2023.

Grant Criteria
· Grants must fund traditional academic research related to broadcasting, electronic media, or mass communication.
· Grants will fund direct costs only (no indirect cost overhead) or researcher stipends.
· Recipients must be a BEA individual member to receive a grant (although non-members may apply).
· Grant funds will be paid to the recipients after recognition at BEA’s annual convention in April.
· The selection committee will be encouraged to give at least one award per year to a graduate student
· Grant recipients will be required to:
(a) present their research at a special session during the BEA Annual Convention in Las Vegas in the year FOLLOWING the award of the grant (ie. researchers receiving a grant in winter/spring of 2023 will present their research in April 2024)
(b) provide a one-page summary of how the funds were expended by January 15 in the year FOLLOWING the award of their grant.

Application Criteria
All application materials must be uploaded to the BEA Research Grant submission site by 11:59 pm EST on January 15, 2023. Applications must contain the following sections:
 Biographical Information:
(a) name and contact information
(b) a short bio of the applicant
(c) applicant’s vita in PDF form
(d) list of co-author names/titles/institutions.

2. Written Proposal: a 1,200-word project description which includes:
(a) project title
(b) purpose of the project
(c) detailed description of the project including methods
(d) short statement about how the project aligns with the BEA mission
(e) timeline for completion.

3. Budget: a one-page detailed budget that describes how the funds will be used to complete the project. The budget should also outline how the author(s) will fund any additional research costs in excess of the grant funding level.

4. Support Letter: one letter of support from your direct supervisor.

Grant Review Criteria
Applications will be reviewed by using the following criteria:
-Importance of the research to society
-Relevance of the research to broadcasting and electronic media
-Completeness and clarity of grant proposal
-Quality of proposal components: clarity, originality, sound methodology, innovative approach
-Likelihood of achieving results in a one-year time frame
-Qualifications of researcher for this project


Award Notification
Proposals will be reviewed by the BEA Research Grant Committee. Committee decisions and notifications will be made by February 15th of each year. Grant recipients will be recognized during the BEA Annual Convention in Las Vegas/
