{"id":6037,"date":"2022-05-08T18:14:11","date_gmt":"2022-05-08T18:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beaweb.org\/conv\/?p=6037"},"modified":"2022-05-08T18:14:11","modified_gmt":"2022-05-08T18:14:11","slug":"nab-session-moderator-aims-to-create-diverse-pipelines-for-entry-level-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beaweb.org\/conv\/nab-session-moderator-aims-to-create-diverse-pipelines-for-entry-level-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"NAB Session Moderator Aims To Create Diverse Pipelines For Entry-Level Jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Story -- 2022 NAB Show\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ammCAy_PROg?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>By: Jacob Hall, Abigail Clark<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LAS VEGAS, Nev. \u2013\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the NAB Show, one session honed in on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives when talking about hiring students right out of college.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grady Tripp, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at TEGNA, said that it starts with looking at diversity in journalism schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI would say that first and foremost, what is diversity like in our J-schools and then what storytelling is within J-schools with either a local newspaper or whatever the campus television station,\u201d Tripp said. \u201cBecause what we heard from the panel and others is that it\u2019s not just a representation of your newsroom company, but people are also interested in the storytelling that is taking place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tripp said that an important aspect for companies trying to be more diverse and inclusive is to connect with employees from all backgrounds to learn about their experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMake sure that you are connecting with employees from all backgrounds to understand what their experience is within your organization and address whatever issues or needs they have,\u201d Tripp said. \u201cBecause when you have a job opening, if all of your employees aren\u2019t running to their network saying, \u2018hey, you got to work here,\u2019 you\u2019ve got to ask yourself some really important questions, right? I think that\u2019s one. I think number two, partnering with colleges and universities as well as other diverse organizations to be able to tap into those networks. So, what partnerships are you creating with the J-school? Are you at campus? Are you reaching out to students to build that future talent?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Taylor Potter, a current Masters of Fine Arts student at the University of Georgia, said that it\u2019s nice to see sessions taking place regarding representation in the entertainment media space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe one that I just came from was about pronunciation and learning how the \u2018other\u2019 is represented in entertainment media,\u201d Potter said. \u201cSo, we talked a lot about people who are typically classified as &#8216;other&#8217; in media so whether that be your sexual orientation, your race or other levels of diversity that we are constantly pushing for more inclusion of in entertainment media.
