Writing Division Call for Papers

The Writing Division of the Broadcast Education Association invites papers for possible presentation at the BEA 50 th Annual Convention and Exhibition, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, April 21 – 23, 2005. The BEA convention theme is “Fifty Years of Excellence for Electronic Media Academics, Industry and Future Professionals.” This theme is intended as a focus for the convention, but does not imply that competitive papers must reflect that theme.

BEA Writing Division Paper Competition Guidelines and Criteria

The purpose of the Writing Division Paper Competition is to provide a forum for presentation of scholarly writing about writing. Writers and the scripts they create are central to virtually all television and film productions, documentaries, corporate media, and nearly every other genre of audio-visual program. Yet the act of writing, the creative processes that writers employ, and the forms and formats of scripts have rarely been the subject of scholarly investigation and analysis.

TOPICS
Papers submitted to the Writing Division paper competition should focus on one or more of the following topics or subject areas or develop their own focus relevant to these areas. The topic focus and significance of the analysis or investigation should be made explicit in the paper.

1. The form, practice and technique of scripting for electronic media, including television, radio, interactive media, or theatrical films.

2. The nature of script writing as a creative enterprise, including a focus on the achievements and lives of writers.

3. Critical analysis of media content that exploits common scripted narrative forms and structures as analytical tools.

4. The historical evolution of media writing.

5. The teaching of writing for the media.

6. The business of writing.

CRITERIA

Entries to the competition will be judged according to the following criteria in blind review by a panel of judges:

1. The paper effectively uses critical or scholarly evidence to make a persuasive argument, and uses and expands communication theory where appropriate.

2. The paper brings original insights or perspectives to the chosen topic.

3. The subject and focus of the paper are significant to media writers and teachers of writing.

4. The paper is well written and conforms to scholarly standards of form and content.
