BEA PANELIST'S GUIDELINES

PREPARATION FOR CONVENTION
· Plan to have copies of your paper available or have a list prepared for people to sign to receive a copy of your paper
· Make sure any audio visual material is edited and text of any presentations will be visible to all in room
· Bring business cards

PRIOR TO SESSION
· Check in with the moderator prior to your session
· Make certain AV material is set up and that you test it prior to beginning of session

DURING SESSION
· Even if the moderator has introduced you, say good morning/afternoon/evening, my name is ____ and I am a ____(title) at _____(institution).
· Marshall your thoughts on the topic and organize them in advance.
· Make a series of bullet points that will be the outline of your opening statement and summation.
· Make certain to plan for time effectively and have plenty of material to discuss.
· Speak into the microphone.
· Do not read your remarks. Make eye contact with the audience
· Be objective!
· Regardless of your relationship with other panelists, keep personal elements out of the discourse.
· If you disagree with a panelist, do not take him/her on across the panel. Wait until the time presents itself for discussion.
· Listen to other panel presentations carefully and take notes.
· Respect other panelists and moderator.
· Don't be a session hog.
