2002 Call for Papers

The Production, Aesthetics & Criticism Division of the Broadcast Education Association invites scholarly papers from academics, students and professionals for potential presentation at the 47th annual BEA convention in Las Vegas, April 5-8, 2002.

Papers submitted to this competition are considered in two categories: debut and open. The open category is for anyone, including faculty, professionals and students, who have presented papers at BEA in previous years. The debut category is for anyone who has not presented at earlier conventions. Two papers are traditionally recognized in each category. Faculty members are asked to encourage submission by graduate students whose work involves issues related to this division.

Prizes of $200 for first place and $100 for second place are available for winners in the Debut category. In addition, any graduate students whose papers are selected for inclusion at the convention will receive a $100 travel award.

The BEA2002 convention theme is BEA 2002: The Future Is Now. The theme is intended as a focus for the convention, but does not imply that competitive papers must reflect that theme.

Submission Requirements

Papers should not exceed 30 double-spaced pages in length, including references and tables. Use APA style or a style suited to the discipline. Papers must be accompanied by an abstract not to exceed 250 words. The same paper cannot be submitted to more than one division during the same year. The author's name, institution address, phone number and e-mail should appear on the cover page only. The cover page should also have the title of the paper and the division to which the paper is submitted, any A/V requirements, and whether it is an "open" or "debut" entry. Any papers without such designation will be considered in the open category. The title should be printed on the first page of the paper and on running heads on all subsequent pages. Three copies of paper submissions are required.

Paper topics should related directly to the Production Aesthetics & Criticism division's purpose, which is the improvement of teaching and the fostering of research and innovations in audio and video production, aesthetics and criticism. The division provides a forum for the exchange of teaching techniques and material; the presentation of juried and non-juried scholarly research; the presentation of faculty and student productions; the demonstration and discussion of innovations in production equipment and techniques; and as a means of evaluation through juried competition of scholarly research and faculty production. Members are involved in the supervision of the only collegiate, association-wide, peer review faculty production competition, that provides valuable feedback and credibility often needed in promotion and tenure reviews. This is the one of the largest divisions in BEA.

Web Posting

If authors permit it, winning papers will be posted on the BEA web site. Authors who wish to have their paper posted on the site must include the accompanying permission form (also available at http://www.beaweb.org/bea2002/paperfrm.html) indicating that they permit the posting of their paper on the BEA's web site should it be selected as a winning paper. If the paper has multiple authors, all authors will need to sign the form. Prohibiting web posting will not affect consideration of the paper for convention presentation.

Submissions intended to permit web posting must include the standard 3 copies in paper form, as well as an electronic version in Microsoft Word or Rich Text format on a standard 3 1/2" diskette. The file can be in either PC or Macintosh format, but should be the only file contained on the diskette. The complete paper should be contained in one file containing the cover page, body, tables, references, etc. All parts of the papers must be contained in the one file. Authors who permit their papers to be posted on the BEA web site retain the copyright of their papers and are free to submit them for publication elsewhere. Further, the online posting of their papers does not prohibit subsequent publication in official BEA publications.

Convention Attendance

At least one author of an accepted competitive paper must attend the convention to present the paper.

Deadlines

Three copies of paper submissions (with web-posting permission form and electronic version on diskette if web posting is permitted) should be sent to the appropriate division. To be eligible for consideration, the paper competition chair must receive submissions no later than 5:00 PM on November 30, 2001. E-mail and fax submissions will not be accepted. The lead author will receive an e-mail confirmation from the paper chair upon receipt of the submission. Winners will be notified by January 28, 2002.
