CALL FOR ENTRIES - VIDEO/AUDIO
The Production, Aesthetic and Criticism Division of the Broadcast Education
Association (BEA) is pleased to invite faculty-produced submissions of
video and audio tapes for the 2002 International BEA Festival of Film,
Video and Media Arts
CATEGORIES:
1. Educational/Instructional: Characterized by a primary objective
to educate the viewer. Content is usually focused on skills, procedures
or concepts.
2. Documentary: Customarily an interpretation of theoretical,
factual, political, social or historical events or issues presented either
objectively or with a specific point of view.
3. Narrative: Includes productions with a primary objective to
entertain through fiction or drama. Productions such as soap operas and
situation comedies may be entered in this category.
4. News: Categorized by productions containing information about
recent events or happenings that are notable, unusual or of general interest.
Entries in this category may include several samples (up to ten minutes)
of faculty-produced news stories.
5. Promotional: Characterized by an intent to sway opinion, popularize
or otherwise advance the objectives of a person or organization.
6. Commercial/PSA: Classified by length (usually 30 or 60 seconds)
with an objective to advertise a product, organization, point-of-view
or event.
7. Mixed: Includes experimental, artistic or music-based productions.
Other productions that span multiple categories will be considered in
this category.
SELECTION:
A blind review of a sample of each tape will be conducted by a jury of
faculty as well as professional peers. Submissions will be judged on the
following criteria: professionalism, the use of aesthetic and/or creative
elements, sense of structure and timing, production values and technical
merit.

RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. The competition is open to all faculty members who maintained
significant control over the content and aesthetics of the submitted program
(producing, directing, writing, editing etc.). All productions completed
after November 1, 1999 are eligible. Applicants are allowed only one entry
per category with a maximum of three categories overall. Each entry must
be submitted on a separate tape.
2. Applicants must submit one complete entry form for each program
submitted. Each entry form must be accompanied by one full entry fee in
the form of a check or money order payable to the Broadcast Education
Association. The entry fee is $35.00. Incomplete entry forms or absence
of entry fees will disqualify the applicant from competition.
3. Applicants must submit FOUR TAPES for each entry. News entries
may submit up to ten minutes of samples of news features and/or reports.
Interactive entries should submit one tape of 10-15 minutes duration documenting
representative use of the program. All entries must be in English or contain
English subtitles. Do not submit works in progress.
4. All videotapes must be submitted on 1/2 inch VHS (NTSC) only.
Send the highest quality dub possible but DO NOT SEND MASTER TAPES OR
ORIGINALS. All tapes must be clearly labeled with the title of the program,
production company, running time, and the applicant's name, address, and
telephone number. Tapes that are submitted in any other format or are
not viewable for any reason will not be accepted into the competition.
5. All audio entries must be submitted on audio cassette or CD.
Tapes that are not comprehendible for any reason will not be accepted
into the competition.
6. Entries submitted on video, audio tape or CD WILL NOT be returned
unless a separate, sufficiently stamped self-addressed envelope is included
with the entry package. Every reasonable effort will be made to protect
tapes from damage or loss, but the BEA, its management or its juries cannot
assume liability for damage or loss. All submitted audio and videotape
materials must be high quality copies. DO NOT send originals, masters,
or one-of-a-kind tapes
7. If an entity other than the applicant owns the rights to all
or part of the submitted program, the applicant must attach written consent
from the owner or an authorized representative of the owner to the application.
8. The decision of the judges is final, and winners may not be
selected in all categories. Exceptions to the rules and regulations must
be authorized by the Competition Chair.
9. Winners are expected to attend the 2002 BEA Convention in Las
Vegas, Nevada.
10. Entries must be received by Friday, November 30, 2001 to be
eligible for competition. Late entries will not be accepted.
