SummaryThe Tim Russert Department of Communication seeks a candidate for a full-time tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level to teach a variety of courses within the department. We seek a candidate who features strategic communication to teach courses in Integrated Marketing Communication, communication research and theory, both at the undergraduate and Master’s levels. John Carroll University is a Catholic, Jesuit university with approximately 2,800 undergraduate and graduate students. John Carroll is primarily an undergraduate institution that values excellence in teaching. We offer a major in Communication with concentrations in Digital Media, and Integrated Marketing Communication and a new graduate program in Digital Marketing & Communication Strategy.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesOur preferred candidate will demonstrate a blend of theory and praxis in student teaching; experience teaching at the college level is preferred. The candidate should have a record of demonstrated teaching effectiveness, and experience teaching in multiple modes, including onlineGraduate courses are taught online using Canvas as the LMS. The successful candidate will need to show potential for conducting academic scholarship that will position them as a recognized expert in the field.Candidates should be prepared to teach a variety of undergraduate courses in integrated marketing communication, theory and research. Our IMC concentration includes core courses in Integrated Marketing Communication, Media Writing, and a Public Relations/Advertising Seminar. Additional IMC courses include Social Media Strategy & Analytics, Branding, and IMC Campaigns. All majors also take a theory course in audience, an ethics course, and communication research. Elective courses include intercultural, organizational, narrative & storytelling, and persuasion, among others. Candidates should be prepared to make a significant contribution to teaching in a variety of these areas.The candidate will also be expected to teach within out interdisciplinary M.S. degree which features collaboration between our department and the Boler School of Business. We offer three certificates (Digital Advertising & Social Media Marketing, Digital Marketing & Communication Strategy, and Digital Media Analytics), which can be combined with a capstone to complete an M.S.
In addition to the teaching duties described above, this faculty member’s additional responsibilities include student academic advising, service on department and university committees, research, and continuing professional development. We expect the candidate to also assist with our PRSSA organization and/or our student-based PR firm. A demonstrated track record of working with students, colleagues, and community members that contributes to diverse cultural perspectives related to integrated marketing is expected.
Required QualificationsThe successful candidate will possess the following minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in Communication, Strategic Communication, Integrated Marketing Communication, Public Relations, or related field; professional experience and strong foundation in digital analytics; experience in teaching courses in analytics, social media, digital media, communication theory, research methods, and Integrated Marketing Communication.Applicants should have active research agendas and teaching expertise in Strategic Communication. The department especially welcomes applications from candidates who are also able to contribute to related emphasis areas in health communication, sports communication, or crisis communication. Methodological specialization is open; however, candidates must be able to teach undergraduate courses in research methods in addition to their areas of specialization. Candidates will be expected to contribute to graduate education. In addition to a Ph.D., the associate-level position requires at least 7 years of previous teaching experience at the college/ university level.
Preferred QualificationsPreference will be given to candidates with a demonstrable record of culturally-responsive teaching.
