The School of Media & Strategic Communications invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track position in its Sports Media program. The nine-month appointment will begin in August 2024.

The successful candidate will have a record of or potential for scholarly research in the field of sports media and should be able to teach in one or more of the following areas within the Sports Media program: (1) Multimedia Sports Journalism,  (2) Sports Production, and/or (3) Strategic Communication/Sports Information. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to teach courses as part of the School’s new eSports Certificate program.

The successful candidate also will have the opportunity to teach at the graduate level. The candidate will be expected to supervise master’s theses and serve on departmental, college or university committees.

The School of Media & Strategic Communications at Oklahoma State University is nationally recognized for producing outstanding practitioners in all mass communication areas and has been continuously accredited by the ACEJMC since 1948. It is one of the largest programs in the College of Arts & Sciences, the largest college at OSU.  The school is home to a vibrant student newspaper and daily newscast. About the Sports Media program

The largest of its kind in the United States, the Oklahoma State University undergraduate Sports Media program is nationally recognized and is growing rapidly. The program has an ongoing partnership with Oklahoma State Athletics that provides students opportunities few other institutions can offer. The program’s faculty members possess extensive practitioner experience in sports media and a research focus in the field. Our Sports Media student organizations include the Oklahoma State University chapters of the Association for Women in Sports Media and Associated Press Sports Editors.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to fill an advising role for these clubs. Students have the opportunity to garner professional and student media experience covering or working for major sports organizations, such as Oklahoma State Athletics, the Oklahoma City Thunder, ESPN, Fox Sports, and the state’s major television stations, newspapers and online news media. Our graduates work for the NBA, the Big 12 and the Pittsburgh Pirates, to name a few.

Qualifications

Application requirements
Candidates should have a Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree. Candidates who are ABD will be considered on condition of terminal degree completion within one year. Candidates should have substantive professional experience in an appropriate area, e.g. sports journalism, sports media production, sports PR, sports information/communication, sports marketing, or sports social media. Knowledge of and experience with the new media environment is required. The ability to teach video production is a plus.
