Summary of Job Duties:

The School of Journalism and Strategic Media in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas has an opening for an Assistant Professor of Practice for Sports Media and Promotion to start in August 2024. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.

We seek a candidate with a strong and developing national reputation, one who demonstrates curiosity in emerging technologies and novel approaches to traditional methods. This non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Practice position entails designing and teaching undergraduate courses in sports media and promotion. The Assistant Professor of Practice may also teach other core undergraduate courses in the school’s curriculum, including foundational courses in public relations. The Assistant Professor of Practice will participate in various faculty- and student-oriented committees, providing service on campus and in related professional organizations.

For promotion, the Assistant Professor of Practice position requires some research, creative work, and/or other scholarly activities. The workload will be as follows: 70 percent teaching, 10 percent research, 20 percent service.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Minimum Qualifications:

With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate:

  • Master’s degree in Advertising, Public Relations, Mass Communications, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the date of initial appointment.
  • At least two years of full-time professional experience in sports media and promotion
  • Evidence of ability to teach multiple courses related to sports media and promotion
  • Evidence of ability to teach introductory content to support core curriculum at the undergraduate level, including foundational courses in public relations
  • A commitment to exceptional teaching at the undergraduate level
  • Evidence of ability to mentor undergraduate students in a variety of settings, including through campus student media outlets, student organizations, and honors projects
  • Evidence of ability to be an active, involved, and collegial member of a collaborative faculty team, the School of Journalism and Strategic Media, the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, the University of Arkansas, and relevant national service organizations
  • Demonstrated evidence of strong interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellence with inclusive teaching
  • Substantive evidence of success as a collegiate educator
  • At least five years of notable full-time professional experience related to sports media and promotion
  • Two or more years of successful teaching experience at the university level
  • Experience in – or the potential for—administering and implementing strategic initiatives, new courses, and curricular programs for sports media and promotion
  • Evidence of professional skills in video/multiplatform journalism, web production, audience analytics, and/or social media
  • Commitment to building a scholarly environment through teaching, mentoring, research, outreach, and service as evidenced in the CV
  • Strong evidence of the ability to be an active, involved, and collegial member of a collaborative faculty team, The School of Journalism and Strategic Media, the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, the University of Arkansas, and in relevant regional and national organizations

The School of Journalism and Strategic Media is fully accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, offering specialized sequences in news/editorial, advertising/public relations and broadcast. Students are trained in writing news, analyzing media, planning campaigns, producing television programs, podcasts, radio, database journalism, and photojournalism publishing.
