The Assistant Professor in Film and Media Arts will be responsible for teaching production courses in the Film and Media Arts program, advising and mentoring Film and Media Arts majors, serving on departmental and college-wide committees, and pursuing a professional agenda as a filmmaker. This is a tenure track position with a 4/4 teaching load.Candidates with a terminal degree (MFA) in filmmaking are preferred, but candidates who instead have significant professional experience in the film industry and a record of teaching in higher education will be strongly considered. A knowledge of and expertise in the production of narrative films, especially short narrative films, is essential. Applicants should have a firm grasp of cinematic storytelling, film set culture and film crew roles and responsibilities, and the tools and techniques necessary to write, shoot, edit, and mix narrative films. They should also have the teaching experience needed to develop this knowledge and expertise in students.As a teaching-focused institution, York College seeks candidates committed to helping students acquire the skills they need to take original narrative film projects from concept to completion in collaboration with one another. The successful candidate will teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in narrative film production, as well as classes on related topics like cinematography, editing, directing, and producing, as needed. The successful candidate will also work closely with students to help them build the experience and resources they will need to secure employment in the film industry after graduation. In addition to teaching and advising in the Film and Media Arts program, the successful candidate will be expected to remain an active professional filmmaker with a well-defined creative agenda. Applicants under serious consideration will be asked to provide a reel of their narrative film work to the search committee. Finalists will be expected to demonstrate competence with filmmaking tools and techniques as part of the on-campus interview process.
