The Department of Journalism and Creative Media in the College of Communication & Information Sciences seeks to hire a nine-month tenure-track assistant professor in sports media to begin August 2024.

Detailed Position Summary
The candidate will develop a robust research/creative agenda around sports media, and their scholarly or creative work should complement the nationally recognized sports media work being advanced in the college. Furthermore, applicants must display an ability to be an active and involved member of a highly collaborative faculty team, with an interest in pursuing external grants. The successful hire will teach two courses each fall and spring semester, which may include undergraduate, Master’s, and Ph.D. courses in sports media. Potential for course development in burgeoning sports areas is desired.

● Terminal degree (MFA or Ph.D.) in a communication or sports-media related field completed by the appointment start date. ABDs at the time of application will be considered.
● Potential for research or creative scholarship that advances the department’s profile.
● Record of teaching effectiveness in communication-related fields, ideally in areas of sports media and/or production.
● Commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues from different backgrounds and disciplines, engaging students with varied needs and interests, and preparing the next generation of media professionals to effectively serve all members of their communities is expected.


Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications (considered after all minimum qualifications are met) ● Professional experience in sports media / sports production ● Record of research or creative scholarship consistent with departmental expectations for the rank of assistant professor. ● Potential for and interest in collaborative scholarship across departments. ● Potential for and interest in applying for external grants/extramural funding related to the sports media discipline. ● Potential to develop and teach courses connecting sports media with the applicant’s primary research or creative area. ● Interest in advising college-wide sports media student organizations (e.g., National Sports Media Association, Association for Women in Sports Media, Associated Press Sports Editors).

The College of Communication and Information Sciences is home to state-of-the-art media and research facilities like the Digital Media Center and the Institute for Communication and Information Research. The Department of Journalism & Creative Media (https://jcm.ua.edu/) resides in the College of Communication & Information Sciences. The department consists of 35 faculty and more than 900 undergraduate and graduate student majors. JCM faculty are leaders in sports media research and creative scholarship. The department offers a highly successful concentration in sports media as part of the news media major. JCM’s undergraduate news media major and professional Master’s programs are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism & Mass Communications. The College of Communication & Information Sciences includes the departments of Advertising and Public Relations, Communication Studies, and the School of Library and Information Studies.

The college has approximately 100 full-time faculty members serving over 3,000 students across bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs, including approximately 80 students in the college-wide, multi-disciplinary Ph.D. program (https://cis.ua.edu/cis-doctoral-program/).

The college’s Institute for Communication & Information Research (ICIR) is a premier research institute dedicated to addressing societal and cultural issues related to communication and information research. The ICIR collaborates with businesses, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, foundations, and other entities to produce high-impact research that informs and improves our evolving communication and information landscape. Housed within the Office for Research, Scholarship & Creative Activity are multiple collaborative lab spaces.

The college also maintains the 40,000 square-foot Digital Media Center, which is home to the Center for Public Television, Alabama Public Radio, and WVUA 23, a full-power commercial television station serving a top-50 television market. The future Holle Center for Communication Arts, a hub for storytelling and social justice, will also be located in the Digital Media Center.
