Professor of Communication Studies (Assistant, Associate, Full – two positions) at Furman University
The Department of Communication Studies at Furman University invites applications for two tenure-track positions to begin August 1, 2024 at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor. The ideal candidates will demonstrate excellence in teaching and a vibrant research agenda, holding a Ph.D. in Communication Studies or related field. We invite applications from teacher-scholars who seek to contribute to the foundational learning experience in the communication studies curriculum in the context of a rigorous liberal arts education.
Our curriculum features one major with two tracks: Rhetoric & Advocacy and Media Studies. The successful candidate will teach foundational courses in the major programs such as Public Speaking or Digital Storytelling, and introductory courses in rhetoric or media studies. They will also be responsible for teaching a methods course and other upper-level courses in their area of expertise.
Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong research agenda in their field, commensurate with a tenure-track position. Our department values forms of inquiry from a variety of methodologies and approaches. Applications are encouraged from candidates who specialize in Journalism & Media Production or Strategic Communication & Advocacy. We are particularly interested in scholars whose expertise intersects with one or more of the following areas: Historically Underrepresented Voices, Africana Studies, Ethnic Studies, Global South Studies, Journalism, and/or Sports Communication as well as from candidates whose work bridges these areas of study in innovative and consequential ways.
Candidates are encouraged to clearly articulate how their teaching and research could contribute to existing department undergraduate curriculum and student pathways. Additionally, candidates are encouraged to note any potential contributions toward the department’s commitment to study away, internship, and first-year programming and the university’s interdisciplinary graduate programs, including the Master of Arts in Strategic Design and the Master of Arts in Advocacy and Equity Studies.
Candidates should also be able to share a vision of high impact, experiential teaching practices. Demonstrating an approach to teaching and research that promotes diversity and inclusion in higher education will strengthen a candidate’s application.
