Summary of Duties:

The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication invites applications for a full-time, permanent, tenure-track 9-month academic year, Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism & Media Production. Appointment begins August 16, 2024.

We are seeking a scholar of journalism studies and/or digital media who has a demonstrated record of research productivity with a high potential for further success, as well as demonstrated success or high potential for securing research funding.

The successful candidate may take a sociological, cultural, economic, legal, ethical, historical, or comparative approach to their scholarship, and may draw on a range of social scientific methods of inquiry. We are especially interested in work at the intersection of journalism, technology, and democracy, with engagement in issues such as (but not limited to): platforms and power; digital media infrastructures; local and/or rural journalism; trust, and misinformation.

At the undergraduate level, applicants should be able to teach an introductory class in media and society, an advanced class in social and mobile media, and at least one of the following: New Communication Technologies, Communicating Science and Technology, Media Ethics, Media Law, and Stereotypes in Communication. Applicants should also address their potential contribution to the college’s graduate-level teaching mission.

Applicants must already have or will have earned a Ph.D. in communication, journalism studies, media studies, or a related field prior to the appointment start date.

We seek a dynamic and collaborative colleague with a rigorous research program that addresses critical issues pertaining to media and society. Professional experience in journalism or a related field is desirable.

The Murrow College of Communication features two undergraduate departments, Strategic Communication and Journalism and Media Production. The Murrow graduate program includes residential MA and PhD programs as well as professionally oriented online MA programs. Our faculty embrace multiple methodologies and research approaches working within a highly collaborative environment. Murrow College houses top-tier research facilities including a survey lab, focus group facility, interview rooms, and virtual reality, psychophysiological, and eye tracking experiment labs.

Annual Academic Salary:

$70,000 to $85,000 | In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.  WSU offers a comprehensive benefits package which includes paid sick and vacation leave; paid holidays; medical, dental, life and disability insurance package for employees and dependents; retirement; deferred compensation and optional supplemental retirement accounts.
