Position Summary: The Department of Communication and Media at the University of Southern Indiana, a public university in Evansville, Indiana, seeks applications for a renewable, 10-month appointment for an instructor in journalism and a student publication advisor for The Shield, USI’s editorially independent student news outlet. In 2021, The Shield was named the top Division 2 newspaper from the Indiana College Press Association; this award marks the sixth time in the past eight years The Shield has earned this award. The appointment will begin August 1, 2023.

 

 

 

Duties/Responsibilities: As an instructor, the person in this role will be expected to teach 6 credit hours per semester, which includes undergraduate course offerings in journalism: news reporting and writing in multimedia formats, social media, and media literacy and/or other courses in the applicant’s area of expertise, in addition to advising students and engaging professional, community, and university service activities. As student publication advisor, the person in this role will provide guidance, instruction and feedback to students who produce The Shield’s weekly online news publication, its monthly print newspaper, and other special publications by The Shield. Duties include: Working with the student editor-in-chief to ensure regular production of newspapers, special sections, and any other publications, Consulting with students on editorial, suggesting story ideas, and helping lead student journalists on coverage as they request and with the understanding that students make editorial decisions, Assisting students to develop their leadership, management, professional and journalistic skills, Serving as the financial agent for The Shield by managing The Shield’s budget, supporting student advertising sales and design staff, and assisting students in investigating sources of revenue, Acting as a liaison between the USI Student Publications Committee and The Shield.
