The Division of Journalism in the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University seeks a Digital Media Executive in Residence to join our faculty in fall 2023. This experienced professional will join a growing, innovative community that seeks to provide students with the skills and conceptual knowledge needed to succeed in the fast-changing media landscape.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the division’s efforts to ensure students develop the ability to write well and produce professional multimedia content for on-air broadcasts and student-run news and fashion websites. This faculty member will teach two digital-media classes per semester. They also will provide hands-on training and oversight for the division’s award-winning, student-run media operations, notably SMU-TV, while also collaborating with those who manage other student-media outlets.

We seek an individual with a forward-thinking, collegial mindset and industry experience creating content for multiple platforms. Applicants must demonstrate the potential to bring national visibility to the school through innovative approaches to journalism, industry connections, and the advancement and promotion of student work.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess at least five years of recent, major-market professional journalism experience with demonstrated abilities in audio, video, and other digital tools that enhance news audience experience and engagement. A bachelor’s degree is required. University-level teaching experience and a master’s degree are preferred. Hiring is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a background check.
