The College of Fine and Applied Arts at Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Communication to begin July 2019.

The Department of Communication employs 38 full-time faculty members dedicated to teaching more than 1,000 students who major in advertising, communication studies, electronic media/broadcasting, journalism, and public relations. The department also offers undergraduate and graduate distance education programs, as well as a dual-degree program with the Universidad de las Américas Puebla in Mexico. The Appalachian student news organization, WASU-FM radio, AppTV, the intercollegiate debate team, and AppSpeaks are all run within the department.

The chair is responsible for the daily operation of the department as well as long-term planning and development. In addition to maintaining an acceptable level of teaching and scholarship, the chair’s primary duties include: managing the departmental budget; seeking external funding; hiring and evaluating faculty and staff; and providing leadership for the department at the college, university, regional, national, and international levels.

Applicants must have excellent written and interpersonal communication skills. They must also have a doctorate in communication or a terminal degree in a related field, as well as a distinguished record of teaching, service, and scholarly/creative activity to merit appointment at the Associate or Professor level. Rank, salary, and tenure will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Special consideration will be given to candidates who also show evidence of the following qualifications: a successful record of administrative leadership in support of a collaborative and collegial work environment; the ability to recruit and retain a highly engaged, diverse community of faculty, staff, and students; a solid understanding of curriculum development and assessment; the ability to secure external funding and successfully manage departmental finances; and the ability to develop a strategic vision to advance the department.
