2014 BEA Distinguished Education Service Award (DESA)Presented to Dr. Douglas A. Boyd, University of Kentucky
Washington, D.C. — Dr. Douglas A. Boyd, University of Kentucky, has been named the 2014 Broadcast Education Association’s Distinguished Education Service Award (DESA) winner.

Douglas A. Boyd is a Professor in the Department of Communication, School of Journalism and Telecommunications, and Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce, at the University of Kentucky. Since coming to Kentucky in 1987, he has held several administrative positions, including Dean of the College of Communications and Information Studies, Associate Provost for International Affairs, and Chief of Staff in the office of the President. He previously held faculty positions at the University of Delaware and University of Maryland, College Park, and was a Fulbright Professor at Cairo University in Egypt. He has an undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.A. from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Boyd has been a commercial broadcaster, an employee of the U.S. Department of Defense in Saudi Arabia, an employee and consultant at the Voice of America, and worked at the British Broadcasting Corporation’s Office of International Broadcasting and Research in London. Boyd is the author of three editions of Broadcasting in the Arab World: A Survey of the Electronic Media in the Middle East and more than 60 refereed academic publications. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media and Journal of Communication.

For over a decade, Boyd, and former BEA President Joe Foote, have respectfully and diligently represented BEA as members of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.

The DESA is awarded to an individual who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the American system of electronic media education. The award will be presented to Dr. Boyd at BEA’s 2014 annual convention ceremony in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 6, 2014.
