BEA Thought Leadership SeriesThe BEA Thought Leadership Series (BEATLS) introduces faculty and students to influential and/or historical figures in the media industry. The short video interviews (5-10 minutes) explore each professional’s background, career path, and day to day responsibilities as well as highlight industry trends. Radio Show Student Scholar ProgramDEADLINE TO APPLY: SEPTEMBER 2 To best guide and encourage students toward and prepare them for successful careers in radio, 229 college undergraduate and graduate students will be awarded registration scholarships to attend the NAB Education Foundation (NABEF)/Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Career Fair and Student Scholars Orientation on Tuesday, September 20 and the 2016 Radio Show in Nashville, September 21 – 23. Thanks to the support of 28 radio groups and associate businesses, students will attend the career fair, conference orientation and a series of special networking events, entertainment and educational content geared towards students. In addition, the students will be able to participate in the conference’s management, programming, sales, marketing, advertising, research, legal, technology and young professionals sessions. |

BEA Student Media ClubsWe developed the Student Media Clubs to assist and guide students by providing networking opportunities and promoting collaborative projects and discussions. Members receive priority acceptance to the Radio Show Student Scholars Program, assistance in connecting to industry professionals, a specialized orientation at BEA’s annual convention and NAB Show, and the club’s faculty advisor receives a complimentary registration to attend BEA’s annual convention if 10 or more of their student members register for the convention. Membership runs from August 1 – July 31 and costs $100. Student Media Club Membership is only available to BEA institutional members. ScholarshipsBEA offers $24,000 in scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students attending BEA member institutions. Scholarships will be awarded for full-time degree work FOR THE FULL ACADEMIC YEAR. One semester grants are NOT made. Scholarships must be used exclusively for tuition, student fees, university bookstore course purchases, dormitory and related items eligible to be charged to a student’s official campus account. BEA Festival of Media ArtsSeparate creative competitions for faculty and students cover the range from dramatic narratives, through non-fiction documentary and news, to the frontiers of interactive multimedia. Last year we had record total of 1,550+ submissions that truly show the top work being produced at colleges and universities across the country. The 2017 competition entry window runs from November 15 to December 15, and winners are announced in mid-February. Oh…..did we mention the $1,000 cash prizes to the best of the best? 35th Annual Distinguished Education Service Award (DESA) is awarded to an individual who has made significant and lasting contributions to the American system of electronic media education by a singular achievement or continuing service of electronic media education. Nomination Deadline: January 11, 2017 2017 Lifetime Achievement in Scholarship nominees should have made a significant contribution to research and scholarship involving broadcast and electronic media. Contributions should be evidenced by related publication in books and journals, over at least twenty years. Nomination Deadline: January 11, 2017 27th Annual Kenneth Harwood Outstanding Dissertation Award offers $1,000 for the outstanding Ph.D. dissertation in broadcasting and electronic media. The award was established through gifts started by Professor Kenneth Harwood and donations from friends of BEA. Submission Deadline: January 11, 2017 Broadcast Historian Award –The Library of American Broadcasting Foundation (LABF) and BEA have partnered to establish an annual Broadcast Historian Award. In April 2017, BEA will present the Broadcast Historian Award to the producer of a documentary/multimedia project between January 1, 2014 and November 30, 2016. Entry Deadline: December 1, 2016 The Urban Electronic Media Award– With support from the Urban Communication Foundation, the award is given to individuals, groups, organizations or institutions whose initiatives have enhanced the ability or performance of broadcast and electronic media to promote problem solving, increase civic engagement, or strengthen monitoring of the urban environment in metropolitan areas. $2,500 will be awarded to recognize significant and lasting contributions in urban communication.
