Ryerson University, located in the heart of downtown Toronto, is

Ryerson University seeks internal and external applications and
nominations for a strong academic leader and experienced educator for
the position of Chair of the School of Radio and Television Arts. This
appointment will be for a term of five years, commencing July 1, 2010.
This is a tenure-stream appointment. The School of Radio and Television
Arts (RTA) is home to Canada’s leading undergraduate and graduate
programs in media production. Its curriculum offers a balance of theory,
creativity and practice across conventional and emerging media
industries. The School is located in the state-of-the-art Rogers
Communication Centre, where its approximately 550 students engage in a
multidisciplinary approach to understanding and creating content for
multiple platforms. Eighteen full-time faculty members represent diverse
backgrounds and areas of expertise, including: media and cultural
studies; media and broadcast industries; law; engineering; business and
management; journalism; fine arts; and creative practice. Faculty are
actively engaged in a wide range of scholarly, research and creative
activities, and participate in several graduate programs. Approximately
20 part-time faculty members are drawn from industry and related
academic streams. An eight-member administrative and technical team
rounds out RTA’s complement of faculty and staff. RTA is currently
home to two endowed Research Chairs. The School participates in numerous
external partnerships. The successful candidate understands the
necessary balance between university sector education and scholarly,
research and creative activities (SRC). She/he will provide
inspirational leadership, and demonstrate a capacity to plan, organize
and undertake academic administration in a unionized environment. An
accomplished team builder, she/he will marshal financial and human
resources to create an atmosphere of collegial consensus in which
student learning and faculty creative and scholarly endeavours will
flourish. The Chair will use his/her broad knowledge of domestic and
international trends in media and broadcasting to guide the School
through an era of rapid technological change. He/she will demonstrate a
commitment to excellence in teaching and an enthusiasm for students,
fostering an atmosphere in which students are included and involved in
the RTA community. She/he will be expected to facilitate curricular
development and ensure the School’s continued currency and
relevance. Candidates from any discipline who possess a strong
understanding of media and creative production in Canada are encouraged
to apply. Candidates with a doctoral degree or a master’s degree
plus relevant media experience will receive full consideration. The
Chair is accountable to the Dean of the Faculty of Communication &
Design for the academic, fiscal and administrative operation of the
School. In addition, the Chair will be expected to facilitate
partnerships with other academic units and sectors within Ryerson
University. The successful candidate shall be a tenured faculty member
or shall be eligible for tenure upon appointment or, in exceptional
circumstances where the University is unable to recruit a tenured
faculty member or an appointee eligible for tenure, a probationary
