Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q), offering programs in
journalism and in communication, is one of six schools from leading
American universities that have established campuses in Education City,
Doha, as a result of collaborative agreements between the universities
and the Qatar Foundation. Each of those American universities brings to
Qatar educational programs
for which those institutions are especially renowned. Northwestern
accepted the invitation to leverage its excellence in journalism and
communication and establish this school as the University’s first
full independent degree program overseas. It did so because of the
University’s commitment to having a global presence and impact and
to expanding academic programs in Middle East studies, and because of
Qatar’s deep commitment
to quality higher education, a free press and communications. It is
possible that other Northwestern opportunities will follow. NU-Q
admitted its first students in Fall 2008. The journalism program
includes print, broadcast, multimedia and interactive media, and leads
to a Bachelor of Science in Journalism degree awarded by
Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism. The communication
program, with curricular offerings in the areas of media production
(film, television, radio, interactive media, etc.), media organizations
and industries, and communication/media theory, leads to a Bachelor of
Science in Communication degree with a major in Media Industries and
Technologies, awarded by Northwestern’s School of Communication
(SOC). The two degrees, which are awarded by Medill and the
School of Communication in Evanston, are the same as those offered by
Northwestern from its home campus, and the curricula are the
responsibility of the deans of Medill and SOC in Evanston. Primary
responsibilities of the dean of NU-Q include promoting the aims and the
value of journalism and communication education, and articulating a
vision and developing a strategic plan for the School, as well as
implementing significant priorities including construction of an
extraordinary state-of-the-art building; collaboration with academic
leaders in Doha and Evanston to build programs and recruit faculty; and
the establishment of strong working relationships with groups and
individuals in Qatar and the Middle East, in Evanston, and within the
NU-Q community. The founding dean of NU-Q is John Margolis, Professor of
English at Northwestern in Evanston. He has successfully launched
NU-Q and will be returning to Evanston once a successor has been
appointed. Qualifications for the position include commitment to the
mission of NU-Q and to the quality of its academic programs, substantial
experience in at least one of the two program areas, substantial
leadership and management experience, and personal qualities including
diplomacy, cultural sensitivity and a pioneering spirit. A terminal
degree is preferred. Inquiries, nominations and applications are
invited. Candidates should review the position profile, available at
http://www.wittkieffer.com/education/index.cfm/page/cur_srch/job_id/2772,
before preparing their materials. Interested individuals should provide
a letter describing their interest in and qualifications for the
position, a resume, and the names of five references, with contact
information; references will not be contacted without the
candidate’s permission. This packet should be sent electronically
via e-mail to Northwestern’s consultants, Jean Dowdall, Ph.D., and
Robin Mamlet, to NUQDean@wittkieffer.com. The consultants can also be
contacted by phone at (630) 575-6131. Documents that must be mailed may
be sent to Witt/Kieffer at 2015 Spring Road, Suite 510,
Oak Brook,
IL 60523. More information about
NU-Q may be found at http://www.qatar.northwestern.edu/about. For full
consideration, candidate materials should be received by June 30, 2010.
Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. The
appointment of the new dean will be effective in August 2010 or as soon
thereafter as possible, but no later than June 2011. Northwestern
University is an
Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity Employer. In a
continuing effort to enrich its academic environment and provide
exceptional educational and employment opportunities, the University
actively encourages applications from women and minorities.
