Panel Title: 3, 2, 1... Tweet: Synchronous Social Media Use During
Class Time
Panel Description: Our students now spend their waking hours interacting
via social media. Whether sending Instant Messages, updating their
Facebook status, or Tweeting passing thoughts, they live in a world of
constant connection for much of the day. The traditional college
classroom is increasing the only place in their lives where they are
expected to switch off these connections, focus on a linear
presentation, and participate only via invitation from the instructor.
We do not believe that this has to be an "all or nothing choice".
Careful integration of planned and student contributed content can be a
very successful way for students to continue communicating in the
fashion they are accustomed while at the same time meeting the goals of
a given instructional plan. The classroom is a place where both students
and teachers can stay connected to each other while reaching beyond it's
walls into a wider world of content.
